About Sardinia

150 miles west of the Italian coast, is home to many fantastic wine appellations, predominantly making wines with Vermentino and Malvasia grapes.

Sardinia is located off of the west coast of Italy and is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily. The Mediterranean climate leads to hot, dry summers and rainy, wet winters. Vines in the Sardinia wine region further benefit from the composition of the soil, which consists of granite, limestone, sandstone and mineral-rich clay soils which offer diversity in the expression of Sardinian wines.

Vermentino is produced mainly in the north of the island, while strong Cannonau is produced in the south. Cannonau (a.k.a. French Grenache, Spanish Garnacha) is the most planted variety on the island and is used as the base for full bodied red wines. These wines are generally high in alcohol and lower in acidity providing for nice round flavours.

Focus Producer: Cantina Mesa

Cantina Mesa stands on hillside slopes looking down onto the Porto Pino Valley. The largest part of the vineyards is located in the Sant’Anna Arresi area, in a valley sheltered from the mistral winds and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

The name Mesa means table or dinner table in both Italian and Spanish and perfectly encapsulates the soul of the winery – sharing the gift of Sardinia with friends and family. The designs on the wine labels are inspired by old Sardinian tapestries, creations of art that evolves over time, just like wine!
